Fulham Palace has been restored and enhanced in a £3.8 million project designed by Purcell, the UK’s leading practice of architects and heritage specialists.
At the same time that the Purcell project was being designed and delivered, The Fire Surgery was appointed to complete a retrospective fire strategy for the multi-building, multi-occupancy Fulham Palace site. Former home to the Bishops of London since 704, the Grade I-listed Palace building is one of London’s outstanding examples of Tudor architecture, with the wider site being a Scheduled Ancient Monument and used for a variety of different functions (including events spaces, a museum, tenanted office spaces, residential use, a nursery, education centre, and outbuildings relating to the extensive garden). Development of the fire strategy has involved many challenges relating to the age and nature of the historic structures involved, with extensive stakeholder engagement required to agree on what can be practically achieved.
Having completed the fire strategy for the site, The Fire Surgery is currently working alongside Purcell architects to complete further on-site investigations and advise Fulham Palace Trust in relation to the implementation of the fire strategy recommendations, cognisant of the heritage building environment present across the site.
