The Royal Albert Hall is a Grade I listed concert hall in London. It is one of the United Kingdom's most treasured and distinctive buildings. Construction was completed in 1871 and the official opening by Queen Victoria was on 29 March 1871. It is the venue for some of the most notable events in British culture, in particular, the BBC Proms, which have been held there every summer since 1941. It is host to more than 390 shows in the main auditorium annually.
The Fire Surgery were appointed in 2018 to develop the new fire strategy with the following objectives:
• Review the existing fire safety information,
• Review the current active and passive fire protection systems,
• Review operational fire safety management procedures,
• Consider current and future refurbishment projects,
• Make practical recommendations for improvements to fire safety where possible to mitigate the risk of fire on the people, the building and the business,
• Provide support on the legal responsibilities of the Hall that may impact on fire safety,
• Collate all work into a new report that will inform fire safety decisions for the future.
Key parts of the project included a new compartmentation strategy, a review of existing fire doors and a full 3d computational evacuation model to better understand the evacuation process.
