The Fire Surgery was commissioned to provide fire engineering support to the re-development of the retail units on the ground floor of the Newport Sandringham building located off Charing Cross Road, London. The purpose of the scheme is to facilitate the alteration and extension of retail space to create high quality public spaces that will bring real improvements to the experience of the eastern end of Chinatown, as well as over 100 metres of retail frontage along Charing Cross Road. The scheme also included the refurbishment of the retail units along Newport Court and Newport Place.
Additional retail space was achieved with the infill of the natural smoke shafts to the car park in the basement bring the then external colonnade internally creating 32,000ft2 of retail and 13,500ft2 of restaurants at the Newport Sandringham building. The car park smoke vent system was replaced with a mechanical some control system with sprinkler protection.
