At the invitation of Argent LLP, The Fire Surgery were asked to demonstrate creative fire safety solutions for the innovative 10 storey office designs considered at the R7 plot on the King Cross site. The challenging brief for Duggan Morris Architects was to move away from conventional corporate commercial offices. Flexibility is at the heart of the design, with maximum opportunity for sub-tenancy and also the possibility for tenants to create atria within their demise. Since the fire strategy is based on phased evacuation to limit the disruption to the overall building and reduce the number and size of stairs, the evacuation strategy had to be flexible to allow for a number of floors connected by atria to evacuate at once.
